In November 2012, the Trinidad and Tobago Chamber of Industry and Commerce, together with the Trinidad and Tobago Stock Exchange, partnered with the newly formed Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute to lead the development of a national Corporate Governance Code.  In January 2013, a dedicated team of individuals from 15 organizations were assembled to develop a document that will not only be a customized set of best practices for T&T companies, but also irrevocably increase the standard of corporate governance, and thereby business performance in our nation.

Fast-forward six months to June 2013 at the second annual Corporate Governance event series hosted by the International Finance Corporation (IFC) at the Hyatt Regency in Port of Spain. At this occasion, Ms. Alex Kjorven, Chief Executive Officer of the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute, on behalf of all partners on the Code project, including the Chamber, offered audience members a glimpse inside the current draft of this much anticipated Code.

    Why a Code?

The idea of introducing new codes or standards are often met with either skepticism from those who feel Codes are not enough, or objection from those who feel there are already too many rules.

In January 2013, the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute became operational as a non-profit organization dedicated to strengthening principles of good governance across the English-speaking Caribbean. Headquartered in Port of Spain, we began with modest steps towards building our membership base while creating partnerships that would later prove invaluable in our early stages of growth.

The vision for CCGI was centered on creating exceptional value for a Membership that would consist of business leaders at the highest levels, who were dedicated to strengthening their leadership capacity as well as performance of their organizations.

The Institute would become a standard-setter, a provider of resources and research that would galvanize change towards responsible governance. We foresaw a world-class director-training program that would be one of a kind in the Caribbean and provide much needed qualifications and credibility to boardrooms across sectors.

Since then, the Institute has attracted members who are Directors and Senior Executives from both private and public sector organizations across the Caribbean. Together with the T&T Stock Exchange and the T&T Chamber of Industry & Commerce, we are developing a National Corporate Governance Code that will inevitably increase the standard of corporate governance and business performance in Trinidad & Tobago.

The establishment of this Blog is in itself a step towards creating a platform for the sharing of ideas, knowledge and public discussion. Stay tuned for posts from local and international business leaders and thought leaders on specific topics in the realm of corporate governance. Additionally, we will use the Blog to address topics or questions that arise from our membership base, while giving Directors in the region a voice in matters most relevant to them.

    Looking Forward

While we have made notable achievements thus far, the true value of our Institute lies in the work ahead, and rests heavily on creating solidarity amongst committed business leaders to advance corporate governance practices in the region.

On behalf of our Board of Directors and our Members, I invite you to join us on Thursday October 3rd, 2013 from 5:00pm - 8:00pm at the Hyatt Regency for an evening reception to celebrate the official launch of the Caribbean Corporate Governance Institute. This upcoming launch event marks not only the formal introduction of the Institute to the business community, but it is also a celebration of our progress to date and reaffirms our commitment towards the advancement of corporate governance for organizations and the markets in which they operate.

Come join us at the launch event on October 3rd, learn more about what we do and what we have planned. Hear from like-minded leaders of industry and become part of a movement, which you can help shape and contribute towards.
